City Government

In Maple Valley, the council-manager system of government is in place. The council-manager structure consists of an elected city council that makes decisions about city policies and a city manager that the board chooses to handle administrative duties. The city manager is in charge of setting policy, overseeing day-to-day operations of city government, managing personnel matters, and creating the city budget.

The council typically elects the mayor in council-manager cities, and the chosen candidate must also serve on the board. The mayor has no ongoing administrative responsibilities but presides over council meetings and is acknowledged as the ceremonial leader of the city.

Seven members chosen by the citizens of Maple Valley make up the City Council. The Council establishes the policy direction for the city, passes laws and resolutions, keeps in touch with local, state, regional, and national organizations, and generally acts as the city’s chief executive and gives the city manager guidance.
