How to apply for a passport in person?

If at least one of the following statements applies to you, you must submit Form DS-11 in person:

  • Your first American passport application has been submitted.
  • You are a minor.
  • You received your previous U.S. passport when you were under 16 years old.
  • Your previous passport was stolen, lost, or tampered with.
  • Your previous passport was issued in the United States over 15 years ago.

If you can’t relate to any of the statements above, you might be qualified to renew using Form DS-82.

You must submit Form DS-11 in person at a U.S. embassy or consulate if you reside in another nation, including Canada.

You can apply in person by following the given steps:

  • Complete Form DS-11.
  • Provide proof of U.S. Citizenship.
  • Bring a copy of your U.S. Citizenship Proof.
  • Show your ID.
  • Bring an ID photocopy with you.
  • Evaluate any Special Circumstances.
  • Give a picture.
  • Fee calculations.
  • Send in your finished application.
  • Check the status of your application.
